Use DAP Patching Plaster to fill the gap to nearly level with the surrounding area. Once that is dry, then you can use drywall tape and drywall mud to finish off everything nice and smooth. Then sand as needed. Rinse and Repeat with the drywall mud and sanding until you get a nice even, smooth finish. Then prime and paint.
P.S. Don't forget to wet (spray with water) the old plaster/drywall mud before applying new (or more) to prevent the old from sucking all the moisture out of the new and causing it to crack.
