Gig Ethernet Transfer: G5 to Intel iMac Why so slow?

So I want to transfer data from the G5 I have to my new Intel iMac 2.16 Ghz. They are both supposed to have gig ethernet. I don't have a switch that fast so I went directly from one computer to another, opened up file sharing, mounted one computer to the other and then proceeded to copy files. It started out taking forever. I could have copied using floppies faster than that. Why the slow down- I thought it would speed along. I then went with firewire with one Mac in FW mode and it blew it away.

Did I miss something? I'm not well versed in the process, but I expected good things.
