I wholeheartedly agee that the Space:1999 Eagle spacecraft NEED a better, more modern show! Those were just so cool!
As for characters;
I wholeheartedly DISAGREE with Richard Dean Anderson, but I do think that Scott Bakula would be an excellent actor for the role (though he doesn't look quite right).
The first actor that comes to mind for Koenig is Harrison Ford... but the more I think about it, the less sure I am.
I'll have to think about Maya and Carter ( Koenig's Executive Office, as I recall?).
One of the secondary characters I remember (I watched the first season on DVD from Netflix last year...) is Sandra Benes (played by Zienia Merton).
For some unfathomable reason, she reminds me of Lucy Liu (even though they don't look anything alike.).
I think Lucy could do the role.... and look very cute at the same time.
Another one I'd have to think about would be Professor Bergman.
I'm currently watching (re-watching some, 1st watch of most) Star Trek Voyager, so one face that comes to mind (and an excellent acting talent) is Robert Picardo.
He's younger than Barry Morse was, but he could do it. And he's no stranger to sci-fi, or to playing a doctor.
I like your idea of an asteroid base rather than the moon... the moon going FTL (faster than light) was always just TOO implausible, even for science fiction).
A large asteroid mining operation, perhaps, on a large asteroid like Ceres.
Spin stabilized for artificial G... (Hmm.. have to do the math on how many rpm it would need for, say, 1/6 G).
I'm sure I'll think of other stuff... but I'll post this thus far...
