PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out?
#2
First off, buy if you need to is the old saying.

The typical Rebel/XT and 10D/20D/30D is about 18 months.

Though the 10D replaced the D60 a bit sooner the rest has remained consistent.

That would put the XT up for replacement in late August with a Sept. shipping date.

As for the 10-12mp issue, it is looking like the aps-c sized chips are getting pretty close to hitting the wall in terms of image quality vs. mp size.

The 30D replaced the 20D and remained at 8mp. Some wondered if Canon chose to do that because they couldn't make 10-12mp aps-c sized chips. I suspect the real reason for remaining at 8mp is there will be a true in between camera above the 30D and below the 5D in August.

Canon has indicated they will have 2 lines of camera, the aps-c and Full frame 35mm sized cameras. The aps-c will get a truly pro level camera to fill the void but they will wait until the FF cameras can be made cheaper.

8mp and very good ISo 1600 and ISo 3200 are great reasons to get into a closeout 20D or a 30D. There isn;t another camera right now for the money and new that can match the ISo 1600 and 3200 of the 20D/30D. It is plenty of resolution balanced against image quality because as pixel density goes up, so does the possibility of noise.

The best value going right now would be the 20D as it comes down in price. Still a very good camera and the value will be outstanding. A few nice new things on the 30D but the 20D has been seen at $99 for the body and maybe less if you are quick on the Dell deals.

The XT is also dropping in price due to other DSLR in that segment. I love the XT for the needs I have. I can shoot clean ISO 800 and 1600, shoot RAW plus high resolution jpgs and have a super compact an light dSLR without the bulk.
