PRON (or anyone else who knows): what's the successor to the rebel XT, and when is it coming out?

I too am almost at the point where I'm ready to make the switch to digital. It's getting harder and harder to find a shop to deal with slide film, so I was figuring on retiring my beloved M4 kit and picking up an XT and one or two L lenses.

Is the 20D worth the $400 premium over the XT? I'm not sure the 'build-quality' makes much difference if the camera will be obsolete in three years, and the electronics appear to be the same.
