Depends on your needs. The 20D adds added grip size, ISO 3200 and 5 frames a second shooting. It also has a metal skeleton and IMO a better AF system.
I like my XT for the very small size, it is SLR minus the bulk. When I need more grip I add the vertical grip accessory.
If I had only one camera and $1k to spend on 1 body then it would be the 20D at it's closeout price and have money left over for lenses.
The ISO 1600 and 3200 on the 20D and now 30D are still unmatched for the dollar.
I would say the extra $400 is money well spent and minimizes the needs for a new camera just a bit longer. I know a few people that have moved past the Rebel/XT for the 20D now and they are very happy with the move up.
