IMHO, telling a user who is used to a working web-based email solution to switch to POP based email client is the wrong approach.
This is likely a browser incompatability problem. Not knowing Earthlink email, I'd recommend searching Google or Macintouch for other descriptions of this behavior.
Another solution may be to recommend Firefox as a more compatible browser than Safari.
