The big issue I have with Apple Lossless is that it's a proprietary format. This limits its usefulness tremendously. Want to throw a bunch of files on a CD and play it on an MP3-CD player or in a DVD player in a home entertainment system? Sorry. Ain't gonna happen. You'll have to reburn them in a different format. Want to play the music on a machine that doesn't have iTunes (or other software that can play Apple Lossless or on a non-Apple MP3 player? Sorry. Ain't gonna happen without reencoding. you get the idea.
