I would be inclined to use the hides raw (rawhide) rather than going through the trouble to TAN the hides... if you're gonna go the authentic route.
The rawhide will dry very hard and make a better "roof"...
Not sure what to treat it with for rot resistance though.
I think the basic construction is pretty darn simple... 3-5 long poles, bind at the top..
Wrap with hides... I'd stitch the seams with leather lacing... Or try glue :-)
