Saw on the New York Times website about cooking steaks under the broiler in your oven. It's like upside-down grilling. Basically you get an iron skillet and leave it in your oven, which is turned up to maximum, oven-cleaning temp, until the skillet is hot, real hot. Then you put the steak in the skillet and put the skillet under the broiler for 8-10 minutes and Viola! Steak. Looked good to me.
