Best I can figure is use of corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup alters the taste. Both would not have been in much use years ago. Also using hydrogenated vegatable oils instead of leaving more of the peanut oil in, is not an improvement. As for best tasting peanut butter, the large 5 lb cans of it distributed by the Agriculture Dept to schools and other organizations from the surplus program were the best that I recall. Real pain to spread, but best tasting.
