We would have never got away with that 15 years ago!
Oh I don't know about that. Reminds me of the Wang VS45 I did backups for in an office elsewhere on campus. They had it shutdown improperly due to a lightning strike nearby that killed power to their building. Status that showed up on the LED display when they tried to boot it back up:

Manual called for them to call Field Service, they will attempt to recover your machine or something to that effect.
