Sounds like somebody didn't bother tweaking anything correctly to suit the room, if it is hard to 'read a thing' with 1024x768 resolutions settings. Icon sizes...fonts...application-specific enhancements, etc.
Projectors are nice, don't get me wrong because we have many, but depending on the placement in some areas, you have to adjust the lenses, resize (digital), and other tweaks sometimes to get them to fit a particular set space. Many of times this will lead to blurring of text, edges...some areas in focus (or seem to be), and other areas not.
