Get the serial number and check the purchase date by seeing how much warranty is left.
If that checks out, the story is probably legit.
Confirm that there was no water damage.
Then call the closest Apple Store and talk to a genius to see what they think of a smoke-damaged iMac. It might merely need a really thorough cleaning with electronics part cleaner.
Try calling someone that specializes in smoke damage, like yoour local Service Master. They did wonders for a friend that had water damage from an apartment over hers.
It's probably worth the flier. I'd buy it if it was local.
