I seriously doubt it's the pillow top portion of the mattress that's to blame. Mattresses also come in a variety of "firmnesses" (there's a better word that I can't think of!) Perhaps the mattress itself is either too soft or too hard. I have an older model of the Sleep Number bed, without any numbers on the control. Overall, I sleep very well in it, but a couple of months ago I realized I was waking up in the morning with more aches and pains than usual. Over time, the amount of air in the mattress had diminished, and when I finally thought of plumping it up again, I immediately noticed an improvement. I didn't change the topper, which is a combo of foam and feathers.
Given what you describe, I think it's more likely you need to change to a different mattress. I know that not everyone is wild about the Select Comfort type, but I do like the way I can change the amount of support so easily. I never could figure out how to judge how well I might sleep on a specific mattress by just laying on it for a few minutes in a store.
