I had a similar experience with a down matress pad.
Costco had great prices, and we wanted to sleep extra-well, so we bought down pillows, a down comforter, and a thick mattress pad. Was it comfy? Oh, yes. My head sank into the pillow and it was like...I don't know...being hugged by an angel? (or hugged by a duck)
Anyway, I found myself waking up sore and tired. My best guess is that the bed was so comfortable I wasn't moving during the night. I'd go to sleep laying one way and wake up in exactly the same position. My spouse had the same problem. After a few nights, we removed the pad. Woke up feeling better the next day.
I still remember it fondly, but evidently it is possible to have a bed that's TOO comfortable.
I'll also second the reports about mattress firmness. Some people need more cushiness, some less, and you won't sleep well on the wrong style.
