Sometimes I have it vertical, sometimes horizontal. Is there some reason to make up my mind?
You might consider seeking professional help, or at least find a hobby
However, when you have multiple externals, horizontal usually saves space.
I'm now working on a solution to get my Mini & MiniStack on top of my 2 burners & 3 FW hard drives. And yes, I am receiving weekly professional counseling
