Why is the Canon Pixma ip4000 fetching such a high price?
#9
We have a iP5200 that my son uses at school. We did the CD printing mod to it, which he uses a lot. It uses chipped carts, but he only goes through a couple of sets a year, so I don't see the delta cost as significant. He'll plow that difference on food over a weekend.

I think that because it is such a discontinuous purchase, it seems like a bigger deal than it is. It's like folks that go cheap on tires... They save a hundred bucks or so at the time, which seems like a good thing, but then live with tires that are not as safe in an emergency maneuver or panic braking scenario... for maybe 3 years. Over that time, the difference in cost is less than a couple of extra beers and pizzas every so often.

The whole concept of chipped carts pisses me off... as does having to go black market to enable CD printing on the Pixma. But that is more of a moral position. For us the financial impact is not that big of a deal when looked at over the long run.
