A call for old RAM
#22
[quote tahoedrew]I've got a B&W G3 400 that I'm waiting to turn into a server with a RAID 5 SATA array when I get some cash to do so. It's got a PCI SCSI card and 2 SCSI drives (a 9GB drive and another 18 or 32GB drive). I'll offer the SCSI card and drives to anyone for REAL cheap if you're interested.

The RAM is obviously staying, there's 768MB of RAM right now, though I think it'd be advantageous to swap out one of the 128MB modules, if not both, for another 256MB module and get myself up to 896MB or hit the 1GB limit.

How does 10.4 run on the lower MHz G3's with modest RAM, i.e. >640MB?

It might be interesting to see how well a SCSI PCI card performs over the stock ATA bus. But the real limitation is the system bus- only 66MHz.

If yours is 400MHz then it will run OK, but the critical factor is the L2 cache. My procs have 1MB. Without that you are a spinning beachball.

As much RAM as possible of course will help, 640MB is decent. OS X will take all of it.

A RAID 5 SATA will have impressive throughput. I was going to say avoid using the stock hard drive because pretty much anything new will probably be tons faster, even on the stock ATA bus. You want a drive that can saturate the bus, not the other way around.
