Arkansas was only turned down due to the sudden nature of their coaching search. Most of those that turned them down "wanted" to coach there but were caught up in their programs. Petrino "made" himself available.
It really is all about winning. You can have all the character on earth. Without the winning part, you'll never get a chance to impart any of it.
Any of these college programs won't hesitate to "fire" you in an instant (see Karl Dorrell at UCLA). Even if you win. Bounce you to the curb before you can say Mama. But now I'm supposed to "not" look out for me and my family? Get real. You win big or you die. No intelligent player or coach is going to purposefully put themselves in a position where losing is guaranteed and that was certainly the case for Petrino.
