I stopped shipping FedEx and UPS to my home about six months ago. I had a lot of problems with deliveries (I am in Chicago also). Sometimes, I would be home waiting, watching, etc. and my online status would mysteriously update to "Recipient not home." Now I send everything to my work, where it goes to the loading dock and someone signs for it. It sometimes takes an extra day for things to get to me, but it is worth not having all the added hassle.
For what it's worth, when I've have problems with FedEx, they've done a lot over the phone in trying to make things right. One problem with Apple is that sometimes they specify that items cannot be signed for - must be delivered to recipient. In those cases, you can't have them hold the item and you pick it up. I found this out the hard way when I drove all the way out to pick up a Powerbook that I had held at Airborne (since I was not going to be home). I had to get a faxed release from Apple that it was OK for me to pick up in person rather than deliver. What a pain.
Good luck.
