I would say it's a good possibility, but this is what I would do.
Put the HD into the MacBook Pro, start up off the install DVD, do an archive and install, boot up off the HD, run updates once again, are download the latest combo updater and use that, check for updates again, use the Mac and test it out.
edited to add: assuming the drive is already formatted the correct way (GUID partition scheme) and has Leopard installed.
