But seriously,... launch Activity Monitor and review resource usage on your system; you probably have one rogue process (maybe more) that is consuming an inordinate amount of CPU time/RAM. If nothing looks amiss in Activity Monitor, you may be looking at faulty hardware.
Do you have an HP All-In-One printer? If so, the driver for it is the likely culprit. This piece of software is notorious for its ravenous appetite for system resources.
