TDM doesn't require the computer to boot from the internal drive. It works essentially the same as booting from an external drive except that it requires you to connect a second computer via the Firewire cable. I don't expect that you'll have success using TDM if you have already failed using an external drive, but you might have better luck than before if the problem is not limited to the hard drive.
