Forget premissions repair - did you perform a backup before updating to 10.5.3?

So, you actually do an "extra extra" backup, a clone, different from your regular backups? Or do you only back up when you do updates? What do you do for backups the other 99% of the time?

If the machine is "hosed", how can you tell? Does it get wet? Do you actually see the hose? I'd imagine if a computer is plugged in, if it gets wet, that's gotta be bad.
