Spotlight indexing will turn your Mac into molasses.
It will stop eventually. The more drives attached, the longer it will take.
In System Preferences/Spotlight you can add disks you don't want indexed (I have a 'Disk Images' volume I mount infrequently and I don't want Spotlight to index it). Just drag the volume onto the Privacy pane to stop it from indexing.
That said, if you use Spotlight (and I suggest you do), it will take a while to build an index of your mounted drive(s). Updates to the index are much faster, but can still be annoying. Doesn't last long on my MBP.
