1. Avoid TN LCD panels, you want PVA or MVA (if refresh rate is 2 or 3 ms, then it's TN)
2. Generally, Dell is the best value.
3. Matching resolution depends on how you want to use it--as one large glued-together monitor, or as a master and slave, so to speak. For the former, I'd go for the same size, and same resolution. In fact, I think there are stands that will hold the iMac and the monitor next to each other. Not necessary, but nice.
