If it fits then it's likely to be the right one. Apple changed the screw-holes around just enough between different models to keep them from being easily swapped.
What version of the OS are you running? Under 10.5, you probably have to add the interface in your Network pref's using the plus-button in the lower left corner of the window.
A quick way to check whether it's recognized is to launch the System Profiler and look under the Network-heading to see if it lists a modem.
