I have done several pieces and my father is in the business. If the furniture is good quality, invest in reupholstering. If it is marginal or worse, don't bother.
The fabric is only one component. There is a great deal of labor involved including replacing padding, strengthening framework, internal repairs and the like.
I currently have a hand me down couch that is in pretty good shape but is ugly (IMHO.) It is decent, not great, quality but I like the overall look of it. I just need to decide if I should reupholster it or buy new. The cost will probably end up being about the same based on the fabric I want.
