Anybody ever have furniture reupholstered?
#7
Don,

I recently purchased a table and four arrowback chairs for $75.00 off craigslist. The chairs had custom cushions on them. Since the cushions looked a bit worn and don't really match the decor of my kitchen, I decided to get the cushions reupholstered.

I found a store that does it and they quoted me $50.00 for the work and stuffing plus the cost of one yard of fabric plus tax. The cost of the fabric ranged from about $9 or so for naugahyde to $30 for a very nice fabric. So, I expected each cushion to cost approximately $75 dollars if I chose a reasonably nice fabric for it.

$75 per cushion.

And, I saw a sample of their cushions. It was totally inappropriate for an everyday kitchen chair, i.e. flat and simple. It was more like the cushion you'd see on a formal dining room chair, i.e. thicker and more rounded in the center.

At that price, I decided the original cushions are just fine.

So, I would ask yourself, "How old is the couch and how much did i pay for it?", compare that to the cost of reupholstering it and then compare that to the cost of replacing your couch entirely. You'll know what to do by that point.
