I have seen 1 Volt on the road in the Chicagoland area, and it was on an auto carrier truck with a bunch of other non-Volt cars.

Leaf outsold Volt 2:1. Why is that?

one of the posts above suggests production issues.
Well, how do you explain this? From the same source:

"And that's not to say there aren't any Volts on dealer lots. Cars.com shows over 2,600 units available in a nation-wide search of new vehicle listings."

If I can drive only 40 miles(actually 20) on electric, I might as well not have it. They need a range that is at least equal to a tank of gas.

Well, if you read it on the internet then it must be true!

Dakota-
Remember.. it's a HYBRID. It's got gas. You're OK. Range is 379 miles.

The LEAF, otoh, is just plug in . It's limited to 73 miles per charge, or a 35 mile round trip.

And no. I would not buy one. I can't justify the cost. My itteh bitteh Honda Civic gets 40mpg. The Volt is rated at 37mpg.

is VOLT a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid? if you have a short commute, can you go without gas at all?

I have a 4.5 mile commute, so a plugin would be ideal for me. problem is they cost too much, and I don't have a designated parking spot in front of my townhouse to charge the car every night.

Some dealers supposedly now have one on the showroom floor and one on the lot . For Sale.

Quirk Chevrolet has 1-2011 left for sale
and 8 - 2012 for sale

some further checking: Herb Connolly in Framingham has 3, most other dealers have 1 and either black or white seem to be the predominant available colors. At least here.

3 in stock in Hellertown PA; $44,630 to $46,235

i don't spend that much on cars, but plenty of people do - and many of those cars aren't rated 40 MPG highway, 35 city.

compare to Chrysler:
http://www.chrysler.com/en/performance/2012/

most of them look 10 MPG lower on both counts.

I know the volt is popular to make fun of, but I think it is a great idea, and one that really has to take off. For short trips, it would be all electric and get close to 100 mpg; with a backup hybrid gas motor for longer trips. The best of both worlds. The problem with the volt is price. the further problem is that they are coming out with a plug in prius soon (or it is out now).

Add neon, hood graphics, and some robotic options, call it VOLT-ron, and they'll sell like hotcakes !

I prefer the looks of the Ampera, the Opel version, even with the "runny makeup" front end. It's more unabashedly and fittingly high-tech, instead of attempting not to scare away the conservative buyers by retaining the familiar Chevy cues.

The plug-in Prius, which some will no doubt fall over themselves to praise no matter its merits, will have a paltry 15 mile range on pure electric power...at a $5k+ premium over the regular version.

BTW, why does the forum software object to the use of the term describing women's eyelash thickener?
