[Pics] Bicycles with extremely fat tires
#11
They're great up in AK in the snow and are superpopular, despite the steep pricing. There are those that ride them year round.

rz - it is a comfy ride on snow, sand, grass or pavement. Not necessarily a fast ride (unless comparing to a normal bike on snow).

I haven't kept up with bicycle technology. They use disk brakes with these tires & rims?

Oh yeah. Some of the newest models are carbon fiber, some with front suspension, and I think full suspension ones are on the way, if not already available. Definitely a hot item right now. kj.

I saw someone riding one in a fairly low-income neighborhood (assumed it had to be a Surly Pugsly or Steamroller) and just out of curiosity searched to see if I could find evidence of one like it being stolen. In the process I learned that you can buy these at Wal-Mart/K-Mart for $199.....

Yup, saw the same one(?) at ToysRUs in March shopping for my 7 years olds new bike. 4" tires. $175.

My first bike had fat tires. It was a 24", single speed, traditional American bike with a coaster brake. I was about 7, and it was too big for me. I got on it and headed down the hill—and ended up inside a large sewer pipe by the side of the road.

Something like this:

Nothing like the fancy machines today.

We moved out to the country when I was 10, and I got an red English-style 3-speed bike with caliper brakes and narrow tires. I rode that one all over the back roads.

Why is there an upcharge for the coaster brake? :terror:

There's not. that image is from a 1960 catalogue, and by then Schwinn offered "2 or 3 speed" models that had hand brakes:

I remember the balloon-tired bikes that my great-uncle had in his musty basement on Cape Cod; they were wild, all streamlined, with built-in lights and chrome. Tres cool.

I think it would be painful to replace the tires at 100.00 a piece though! kj.

WTF? I can buy a car tire for less than that!

For a Geo Metro perhaps...Angel

But seriously, those tires are probably kevlar belted. I have kevlar belted tires for my commuter bike, and they weren't cheap.
