The next rev of the MacBook will have inductive charging, like the Watch.

This would be true for my wife - except that I make her do a CCC backup from time to time. I suppose that means I am the one that uses that port and not her ! (she does have a wireless Time Capsule for Time Machine backups).

meh. Im over the whole bootable backup thing anymore. Theres under 100 GB on my system SSD. A complete restore from my TM backup wouldn't take that long.
heck, Id probably just start from scratch if I had drive failure. All of my software can be downloaded or is cloud based -- no more DVDs. The only thing I would miss is all of my emails. Figure a fresh OS install + download apps install might only take a couple of hours, tops.

jdc,
A couple of hours may not be an issue for you but it's a major problem for me. At my office, I can't afford to have a machine down that long during the normal business day. A bootable clone allows us to be up and running in a matter of minutes. That's doable. The office has alternate machines to use while one is being restored but a machine down hampers us significantly. Time is important. There are other things to do during the day than restore a machine, i.e. handle orders, bookkeeping, speak to clients, etc.. The clone lets us get running quickly so the primary drive can be restored at a later, more convenient time, i.e. after hours, when it isn't buys, etc. Time is less of an issue at home. I don't have to rush when restoring my personal machine. Still, though, who wants to spend hours on something that can be accomplished in minutes? Robert

Do the initial backup with a USB connected drive and then connect the drive to the "server" Mac for incremental backups.

it's the old business model where the main platform provides a base for making the REAL money on the required accessories...and it's very disappointing.

Kraniac wrote: Nope, not even close. Plenty of margin in the platform itself. The real money is in the App store. The accessories are only for people who need them, which is apparently everyone on the forum needs every port imaginable. Most people don't need any. If you want to use a USB device for backup or restoring, run it off battery. With an SSD it will take under 30 minutes to backup or restore 200GBs. If that doesn't work for you, then this isn't the laptop for your needs. |
