Yes it's "whole" not "while". I'm typing on my phone for Pete sakes.

Sorry...wasn't trying to be smart. I thought the original question really was that mucked up.

If a student's parents are demanding and irresponsible, a teacher will often slip a question like that into the work he/she sends home with their child.

Maybe they meant no side is MORE than 12 inches?

Was it a worksheet or problem from the book?

Very few teachers write their own problems any more for a number of reasons (like avoiding charges that the work is not properly related to the state testing standards). That is especially true of math.

I'll bet it was a book provided problem or worksheet. I'll also wager that the book is a Pearson publication. That company is well known for mistakes in their class materials (yet Pearson is the leading standardized state test provider in the nation)

Typo, no new math needs to be invoked.

That was my first thought but that still leaves 11 x 9 and 12 x 8 so the area could be either 99 or 96. Something is obviously wrong (or I'm obviously delerious). At the very least, the wording should be 12 inches or more.

Yes. It's a worksheet. Kids don't have books anymore. They have worksheets.

It's especially frustrating when she brings home her work and you have to guess how to work the problem b/c the worksheet doesn't have instructions on it.
