When the D750 was originally introduced it was around $2,500. If there is any chance you might shoot low light action then go with the D750 with the better AF sensor.

I'd love to get this, but it's still $1600 and I don't earn money any longer from photography, so... not yet.

But what about the D500...which hopefully will dip back to the $1600 territory at some point? I've always been infatuated with the D750, but for sports I need the reach more than I need FF.

The D500 is an APC-c sized sensor and no APS-c sensor comes close to the image quality of full frame sensors after ISO 400. The D500 has a great AF sensor and faster frame rate but the D750 is no slouch at 7fps and has much better high ISO performance. The D750 AF sensor is not as modern as the D500 but it is very very good.
