Talk me out of a mild mid-life crisis car... Honda Civic Si ?

2013 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L (Manual, V6): 0-60 mph 5.5 sec.

Most people don't realize the Accord was faster than the Si in this model year. The trick is finding one that wasn't abused.

2016 and newer Civics are much better than previous-generation models.

Agreed. Civics have been blah before that. Nobody loves them.

Is a manual absoluley necessary? Coupe or 4 door?

In the $10K range Id look at a infinity G37. 325 HP. 2 or 4 door. If you are a honda guy, look at an acura TSX (only 200 HP like a Si and 4 door) Both They had a manual option.

Both much, much nicer than a civic. But you are looking at something closer to 9 years old, maybe 100K.

OK, Just a quick search of carmax I near me found a several super clean G37s (2010s) and a TSX w/6 SP (2012) for $12K.

Other coupes spring to mind -- min cooper S, turbo Beetle, 328i, hudnai genesis coupe. Lots more options depending on your actual wants.

There are a lot of cars that I'd look at first, before a Civic Si, if I were looking for "zoomy".

What's your budget? Are you capable/willing to do maintenance yourself? Do you have any constraints around number of seats? Would convertible work?

I personally think Mazda makes better driver cars - I'd look at Mazda 3 and/or Miata for Japanese, a used 3 series BMW - e46 or e90 - or VW GTI for German, etc.

If you like Hondas, then go that way. They are reliable.

Mazda was going to be my suggestion, too -- and they are just as reliable as Honda.

I LOVED my G37. Only reason I sold it was I needed something more practical.

The Volt is REALLY quick up to about 35-40mph, then it calms down quite a bit. But it isn't exciting. There's no 'vroom!' and no shifting. It just quietly pins you in the seat then gently continues on to 60-70mph. the 0-60 time is nothing to get excited about, but 0-30 is impressive and just a bit shy of the Tesla P85. You get accustomed to that acceleration pretty quick.

Testing by Motor Trend indicates that the 2016 Volt is actually faster than the standard Model S 85(not the P85) from 0-30.

Thanks all ! You've given me more to think about !

I'll happily work on a car. There are things I won't do because I am liable to murder the car (or myself). I like the idea of a 'simpler' car.. golliwog technopop gizmos make me twitchy when I open the hood. Then again, an uber reliable vehicle is nice... no more carbuertors ! (blech).

I might just take my civic, fix the holes and add a few tuner type hidden things like a K&R air intake and drive it to death for another three years.

Yeah, my wife would like something a bit newer and bigger than her 2010 Mazda 3, almost 100K on it. But its loaded -- leather, sunroof, heated seats, BT, etc. and she will want all the same.

Id like to try and steer her towards a $15000 or so used G37, or ES 350. Problem is they are all the same 2010 year with similar miles. finding some 328s with half as much mileage. Worried about long term on something like that.

Just remember that It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow!

Hence the Miata as a good choice. Simple, quick but not necessarily fast, cheap, reliable...
