One of the photographers that I follow on Youtube, Tony Northrup, has been railing on camera manufacturers to start adopting the ease of use of phones into cameras, if the camera manufacturers want to stem the tide of falling sales. As space-time suggests, the manufacturers need to be adopt cell phone ease of use so that people can easily share to social media. Either make it such that photos can be sent directly from the camera, or at least make the tethering the camera to the phone seamless, such that photos can be transferred from the camera to phone with no intervention. I have both Canon and Sony, and both camera's system software is, at best, clunky. It's a many-step process to get the camera and phone to talk to each other, then there is a limited choice in how to select and transfer the photos.
I have the Canon m50 mirrorrless with the 18-150 lens (29-240mm FF equivalent), and it is a nice, tiny package that takes decent pictures. I got it because I wanted a larger sensor lightweight camera, as carrying around a Canon 6D with the 24-70 f2.8 L IS lens becomes uncomfortable after a while.

Reviews of the M50 I've seen say the camera synchs easily (Bluetooth?) with your smart phone, both for storing photos and for sending them to the Internet. Sounds like you wouldn't agree.
Canon does not bundle the 18-150 with the M50 here in the States, but Amazon and 6th Avenue are now offering the 'International' bundle. The standard 15-45 kit lens makes a nice, small package that will fit into an inconspicuous leather case for traveling. Will the 18-150 as well?
I was also thinking about Sony, but with an adapter I would also be able to use my Tamron 18-270 on the M50, which also (unlike Canon's M5 and M100) comes with a built-in EVF.

I took pictures with both my SX-50 and iphone SE on our Alaska trip. The SX-50 was orders of magnitude better even with the close shots. Of course my phone is a few generations behind...

l've reached peak photo storage, myself. I don't have the patience to sort, delete and edit what I have. 95% no one else will see or even care about if they do. I'm not excited about taking more. I lug my D90 (yup, ten years old and works fine) on vacation and that's about it. I mean, it IS great and much more capable. But the iPhone SE is fine for random in-the-moment snapshots.

To be fair, most people who will let a phone of any brand become their full time camera, have little to no interest in taking long distance pictures. They want take pics or snaps, and some times, very nice ones.
The Event showed what fantastic pictures the new line up is capable of. They'd be a great camera for a lot of people, and always there, for the most part.
Apple showed what the can do, but didn't say they'd do everything. That would have been foolish.
Non-photographers pretty much know what they want to do with a camera, and know whether or not a phone or camera will work for them. The same applies to photographers.
To wit, a phone will be an excellent choice for a lot of people. And for others, there's always a camera when they want one.

How many people had a nice slr with a stable of lenses back in the film era, let alone actually used them on a regular basis?
I suspect most people had some inexpensive point and shoot film camera, or a Polaroid.
In other words, the sky is not falling, however, the gravy train is ending.

Looking at the chart in the article I linked, it would seem to show that with the advent of digital photography, there was a boom in camera sales, which now the smart phones with their built-in digital cameras have usurped.
Are cameras going the way of dedicated servers, as the author suggests? I suggest not. There are enough professionals and hobbyists to keep the business alive, but at the new, comparatively low levels.
