Ken Burn's Country Music PBS show is on now
#11
We watched a bit last night and really enjoyed it.

Having this show pop up right at this time is kind of serendipitous for me. My mother's family in north Alabama had a band very similar to the Carter Family (although in the case of the Johnson Family String Band, with nowhere near as much fame or commercial success). I've recently been looking into them and ran across this wonderful video on YouTube a few weeks ago. The pretty teenager on the right at 14 minutes in is my mom.

Last weekend I found a distant relative who had a few radio show recordings of the Johnsons' band (they only went into the studio once, and those were never released) that I just received copies of this morning. Mom sang with the band when she was a little girl in the 40's, I'm hoping to hear her voice on one of them.

What a wonderful, priceless family document! Gather everything and you can and consolidate it for future generations! I really enjoyed the youtube video.

They are carefully trying to navigate the race issue. Probably see a lot of Charlie Pride. I am a big fan of Riannon Giddens and no offense to Mr. Pride, who I've always dug, but she's a lot easier on the eyes.
