I wasn't even aware of it until the band Yacht Rock Revue started getting a lot of buzz in Atlanta; that was a dozen or so years ago and it's practically a subculture here now. They sell out fair-sized venues (notably Chastain Park) at least a couple of times a year, own a bar and live venue of their own (Venkman's), tour nationally and have a bunch of offshoot bands.
The secret? They're really, really good. We caught Elton John's Vegas show about 3-4 years ago, then saw YRR a few weeks later.... and their version of "Tiny Dancer" crushed Elton's...

The secret? They're really, really good. Yep! I wasn't aware of the named genre, but I did get a kick out of wiki page description, "...common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals..." that's my personal understanding of just about all genre's production. If I want to dirty-up the vocal, that would come after I had cleanly captured it. For me, production values are a necessary, if not sufficient, ingredient of "really, really good."

I didn't click on all those YT links, so not sure if this was mentioned, but Questlove put out a comprehensive yacht rock/dentist pop playlist in tribute to his friend, Anthony Bourdain, after his death:
