Russia has absolutely no need to use nukes to overrun Ukraine.
I’ve read that though it was perhaps expedient the US had no need to nuke Japan either.

The United States? No. NATO, maybe.
My understanding is that Russia, as well as others, are now days equipped with tactical or strategic (I’m still not clear in which is which) arms that fall a shade closer to ‘conventional’ weapons than planet killers.
If that is in fact correct, that makes for a much more complicated discussion.
Try to limit the situation to “only” opening the door to some kind of normalization of these supposed non-doomsday categories of weapons? Or is that just a distinction without any practical difference?
Or conversely, try to slam the door shut with TOTAL scorched earth maximum retaliation on every front, nuclear, cyber, even biological and chemical. In effect setting the price of even dipping a toe in such waters simply nothing less than being scrubbed from the face of the earth?
Is there any middle ground?
Given the way the board is set up, my assumption would be decions have already been made. The boulders have cast their ballots, and it’s too late for us pebbles to vote on the avalanche.
