When I was about 5 to 10 mostly wore converse or keds . Everybody called them tenny runners . And you always stripped the rubbery material off the ankle with the logo .

joggers are what the brands themselves call them

We called them all "Tennis Shoes" regardless of the purpose of the shoe.
My friends and I called them that too when I was a young 'un! Funny how you called them that two thousand miles away. And, here in Detroit, and most of MI, we call soda "pop". Everyone knows where I'm from when I ask for pop...

yeah, I thought that the midwest was "pop" territory and the "coke" thing was from the south.

I think, although I'm open to being corrected, that "sweatpants" has come to mean the pants that have a loose cuff -- and "joggers" are the pants that have the cuff with elastic that grips your leg, although not necessarily tightly. And the pants that had elastic but the pantslegs were long and loose enough to flop down and obscure the cuff seem to be obsolete.
