Mercedes adopts Tesla charging standard, TSLA @ $283...
#11
Does Tesla license their tech to other charging stations? I don’t want a situation where the majority of EVs use the Tesla connectors but they are the only provider on the market.

Sure, people can still charge at home, if you can carry around adapters but for full speed you need the real connectors without adapters.

Haven't seen what licensing arrangements Tesla is making or not with other companies. They only opened the connector specs last October and gave it the NACS moniker. Before that it was strictly proprietary.

Yes, several non-Tesla charging stations have signed on board with the NACS standard.

I think gas is $3 a gallon here. Filled the Volvo a few weeks ago with zero waiting and been driving it daily. Still over 200 miles until it will need gas again.

Gas is $3.10 here and I never stop at a gas station or a charger because I charge at home while the car is just chilling in the garage.

Do people still think you can only charge at charging stations?

$4.19 at Costco here in Souther California.

Gas is $6.5 here in Europe. Not sure how much is a kWh. That probably varies from place to place and how much you use a lot more than gas does.

Tesla are still building 1 supercharger station per day. Now imagine all of those covered with solar panels and several MWh batteries…distributed all over the country. Tesla are quietly becoming a nationwide power provider that also sells energy to drivers.

NACS is on its way to being a formal standard.

What I find perplexing is the view that Tesla was keeping this proprietary. Not true. Tesla made all patents available Jan 31, 2019, and had offered to do well before then,

Most people do not understand that Musk would like to NOT make superchargers at all. But the industry did NOT want to make EVs, so they built out their network. They were also the first to need high-speed power recharging, so they made a BETTER connector.

Yes, I find this puzzling. If you are a homeowner, you will add a Tesla charger and you will charge at home. I love not going to a smelly gas station.

We use Superchargers when we travel point to point.

My two Millennials are wrestling with not having a home. So they are getting the family PHEV that can be charged on a simple 110V - a Volt. I think there will be a need for good PHEVs for decades to come for this reason alone.
