Would you move to Shanghai to/for/because of work?

If I were in my twenties/thirties again with small kids (or none), yes, absolutely.

Now, no.

I have a business associate who did it with teenagers.
But they're from Norway and there's a bit more accepted nomadism there. (They lived here in the U.S. for 12 years.)

I've bought part of the farm I grew up on. I'm not so sure that was a terribly wise idea, either. Nostalgia can be painful sometimes.

absolutely, we almost had a chance to move to Hong Kong about a year ago, we would have done that too.

Hong Kong and Shanghai are definitely the "new" CHina. Just make sure you know where the hospitals for Westerner are. Yes, there is a difference. I hope to spend a few years in each city in the near future. BTW, gets your kids to learn Mandarin Chinese now, it will increase their chances of getting a better job. The best food is in the dives, no the modern places but make sure they cook it super hot.

I actually got even more ill after volunteering at an orphanage there. I had to be on an antibiotic IV for two days. The first 3 floors of the hospital were pretty filthy. The 4th floor was for Westerners. It was well lit, clean, no dust, no water dripping on the floor. I got an IV from a real IV bag with sterile a sterile needle. SOme of the first floor people were using, I kid you not, a plastic Coke bottle for the IV container. This all while people were chain smoking.

Dang. Double Whammy! That's pretty clever about the Coke bottle actually. I like how you warned us to have food cooked "super hot." I need to carry my own torch.
