After rooting through his files for juicy tidbits and harvesting what I want to keep, I'd probably start fresh.

Oh, and congrats on the impending nuptuals. Soon you'll become "The Wife."

Thanks... I've been known as 'the Wife' for years now, and everyone assumes he's my husband as it is. We've been really happy as we are-OH, and he finally wants a Mac after being a PC person forever. Not bad, huh?

What's the overall opinion regarding not being able to look up the Powerbook's serial number, and what I should do about the seller and feedback? Is there a faster way to confirm that it does NOT burn CDs than to try to burn one?

Thanks,

I'd try to burn one. See if it works. the other thing you could do is to look it up on everymac.com

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/po...4_500.html

Is that what you have? If so, then a DVD ROM is standard. The other way is to look it up in the system profiler, write down the name of the optical drive and do a google search for that model...

I also didn't want to gush forever to people who might not be that excited...

Go ahead and gush. Not everybody here is a cynic.

I want a Mac person too. I just hope she has big tas.

Otherwise, I'm pretty easy.

I know that the DVD-ROM is standard-this was advertised as having a Combodrive. Thanks for the ideas-I'll use those. Now I just don't know how to approach the seller, if I'm not only getting the slower processor speed but also no burning capability-both were promised.

I am all set with my other half having big tas. Mine are enough for both of us. Smile

Serial number is QT110265JF8. I thought it was the Gigabit Ethernet model but now I'm not sure... need to hit Apple/support to learn more again.

Okay, it's official-no CD burner(the name of the drive is even DVD-ROM). I also learned that the power cord where it goes into the computer is badly frayed and seems like it's about to break at any time. It works fine but is iffy looking. I'm not too thrilled with the description matching the item(funny how nothing is *better* than described in the auction), though I will admit that overall I'm still happy with the PB.

Does NOT appear to be the Gigabit Ethernet PB G4. So yes, the everymac link is the one, I guess. No vent in the back door to indicate Gigabit.

What do I do with this guy? Bad packing, damage that wasn't mentioned, and two fairly major components misrepresented. Nice enough guy, it seems, though(otherwise).

Thanks,

Congrats!

Model M7710LL/A on EveryMac shows this:
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/po...4_500.html

It came standard with a 6X DVD-ROM drive and 10/100 ethernet (not gigabit).

Edit: Oops, sorry for the redundancy -- I completely missed Spiff's post.

Yes, that is the machine. I'll go ahead and post the auction for you-yes, I got a good deal(he lost money on shipping alone), BUT I might have put that money into a faster machine with a burner and a non-damaged power supply. I can't say I'm truly unhappy, just misinformed... definitely like the machine, just would have been equally happy to spend another $50 for what I thought I was getting.
