Alternatives to pseudephrine?
#11
Deck,

I hear you. Advil Cold & Sinus (or a generic equivalent) works wonders for my sinus congestion. Nothing else gets the job done. If you find an alternative that actually does work, then please post! Eating very hot spicy food helps, too. But, that can be a problem for people who can't handle food with extra zest.

Some of the pharmacies here have a small sign on the shelf that the 'good 'stuff can be had at the Pharmacist's counter with an ID.

I've never liked any of the cold medicines like Dimetap or Nyquil because the side effects are usually worse than the cold symptoms. Most of the time I'd rather have just the cold symptoms and go back to bed.

order it online w/o a script, no matter what your state law says.

I'm guessing generic Claritin® (loratadine) doesn't work? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loratadine

It has to be the "D" type.
Claritin-D 24 or its' generic equivalent.
Walgreens, CVS, Longs, Target, WalMart, they all carry it under house brands.
12 hour will do, but you are still limited to the 15 pill per month federal mandated purchase but you have to take two a day.

Also, the correct spelling is "Pseudoephedrine", that makes it easier to look for medication on the web.

Phenylephrine is readily available and fantastic!!! except for the fact that it has no discernible effect on sinus symptoms.

All you folks taking pseudoephedrine that are 30 or older best be checking your blood pressure and pulse every so often. That stuff causes some very serious bp elevation (aka stroke risk!) and palpitations or tachycardia. I'm just sayin'....Just don't use it and ignore these issues. Especially that whoppin' 240mg of sudafed in claritin-d 24hr.

Benadryl/Diphenhydramine works the best on allergies for me but it makes me pretty sleepy.
