Americans' Food Stamp Use Nears All-Time High
#11
Devobill-- the graph makes it look like the need for food stamps rose steadily through the W years. I guess I don't know what you're trying to say either, although I have noticed that besides the birth certificate thing the new tack of the dying right is to accuse the democrats of making things seem worse than they are to justify . . . I don't know what. Increased investment in social services?

Anyways, more importantly, is that you in the pic? Any interest in a trip to Chicago? I'd love to chat about this with you in front of a warm fireplace over hot cocoa.

I figured it out! Yessiree I did! Back in the 1960s, the Dems decided to give out vouchers for food instead of letting people starve. Now, had they not done that, not only would there have been some deaths due to starvation during the 1960s (most likely of kids), which would have immediately reduced the population, those deaths also would have reduced the number of births throughout another couple of generations. With fewer people - and especially with fewer "low lifes" who don't carry their own weight and work and need others to buy their food for them with tax dollars provided by the responsible folks - the costs associated with a number of other federally funded programs would have decreased, too. Gee, education costs would have been lower, social service costs would have been lower, which means there would have been all kinds of savings to the federal budget. What a great way to reach the Republican goal of smaller government!!

Now, what I don't understand is why, during those periods of time when there was a hefty Republican majority, the food stamp program wasn't eliminated by them. Hmmmm. They could have done that so easily, so I wonder why they didn't? Could it be they knew that would have been the wrong thing to do? No? Well, maybe in that case they just decided to keep it in place, so there would be one more thing to blame the Democrats for at some point in time when they were really desperate. No, that's not it, either? Huh, I wonder what it was then? I guess we'll never know, since this poster seems to assume we can follow his line of logic through links to charts.

By the way, BL, I really think you could do better. Smile

Well, as they say, there's no accounting for taste.

I'm not sure alphadog's summary of history is really correct? Next chance I get, I'm going to do some reading on the effectiveness of "food stamps" as a program. As it stands, I'm not terribly impressed, but we'll see.

In my experience, I have seen a lot of people who continue to work, through circumstances I'm pretty sure I could not endure. On the other hand, I see a lot of people receive help who don't work, and would be a lot better off working. Some people like Devobill see a danger in people becoming too dependent on the gov't, and I can see where he's coming from. Food stamps are not the only means to accomplish the end (people not starving).

BL, I'm surprised you would use that kind of a tactic. I don't find it real cute. kj.

I think you missed AD's primary point, which was that NeverMind - or is it DevoBill? - appears totally unwilling (unable?) to become engaged in true discussion and clarify questions about the point s/he/them was trying to make. If you notice, posts subsequent to the original are a touch light on substance. The 'Dog merely took several snippets from the linked article and created a scenario, but the depth of true research could probably be measured in terms of seconds. If AD thought there was someone interested in actually talking about this, she might even do some real research!

I don't know why you would think I don't want food stamps to serve a purpose. I know there are tons of people who truly need help, and I didn't explicitly say that, if that's what you're talking about. kj.

No prob there. I was just talking about the scenario you took quite a bit of time to conjure. I know you didn't mean for it to be a fair assessment, but I'm interested in what the truth is, so I'll probably see what I can see. kj.

Merely an example of the lengths to which some people are willing to go to postpone washing the roasting pan from yesterday's turkey. Smile
