What bruceko said. All the video mags have panned the quality of this transfer saying it was a disappointment after the high quality of the DVD. Wait for a re-release.
Do I need to buy The Fifth Element again?

Is there a place that shows releases? How would I know if this is the same sad transfer or a new one?

They did a new transfer very quickly, replaced the old one for anyone who bought it and asked for replacement. It is a really old story. The new one is spectactular.

Yes, be sure to get the remastered BD, not the original. The white sticker along the top of the case actually says "The Fifth Element (Remastered)", so it's easy to tell.
The remastered BD is stunning. Ditch your DVD copy ASAP and get the BD - this film DEMANDS to be viewed in hi-def.

As a result of this thread, I borrowed the DVD from my brother and watched it this evening. Really enjoyed it and it looked great upconverted on my HD player.
Saw the standard DVD in the Walmart $5 bin about a week ago.

Great movie. The Fifth Element was my first movie purchase in DVD format.

It is one of my guilty pleasures watching this flick. Never liked the ending that much. The effects seemed wrong.

The Blu-Ray folks would love it if you do. More money for them, less for you. How often do you watch it, anyway? Is it really worth buying in another format for the (hopefully) few times you will watch it?

I will sell off my other version to get this. I was just at Best Buy and it didn't say remastered so I held off even though I am certain they aren't selling the old versions anymore. But I had to come home and look at the release date to be certain. Yes, the movie is that important and yes it would have been my first BD movie but the kids deserved Wall•E that day. I think I will order it online and pick it up tomorrow after work. Thanks for the info peeps. I think it's time to calibrate my tv now.
