Apple Just Isn't What It Used To Be
#11
The one time I prepared for a big fight with Apple was when the screen went on my MBP. I sent it back, and they told me (by email) that the repair would not be covered under warranty because the problem was due to misuse. I called up expecting the worst. My call got escalated pretty quickly, and before I got a chance to get huffy, the supervisor said, "Our technicians think this was the result of damage caused by misuse. Nevertheless, I'm going to fix this for you under warranty." The computer came back the next day, fixed and looking like new.

I've had many other Applecare experiences, but this one stands out.

I can't say much about the quality of their products, but from my vantage point, their service remains excellent.

(bought my first Apple in 1982).

Nice. Smile

In actuality, anybody here whose Mac pooped out after four months would most likely be similarly vexed.

I was vague intentionally. It's just a bad hard drive, and I know these things happen. I am not an idiot, so don't any of you dare patronize me. I realize that my MacBook is covered by warranty. I am well aware that Apple's customer service is in most cases exceptional. This isn't about the stupid computer. It's the principal. It seems like Apple may be focusing more attention and resources on iPhone and iPod than on Mac, and (I'm not saying they are) IF Apple is trying to take advantage of its monopoly and become a luxury company, that is NOT ok. That really doesn't alarm any of you? You're willing to continue to pay through the nose for products of mediocre quality? As customers that have been loyal to the company for years, we deserve better than that. That's all I'm saying.

.

there service is excellent. no argument here. but if they didn't have excellent service, they'd have a lot less consumers, considering that all of their products are completely sealed these days.

I'm usually impressed the Hard drives don't fail more often. They're spinning at 7500 RPM with super high precision. Just think about that for a bit.

The problem is, problems happen. What about me, I've had at least 10 macs, iPhone, iPods and Apple TV. The iPhone is the only Apple product I had to take back, it was the wake button quit working. So really millions upon millions of products, there will be some problems but for the most part it seems like they're doing pretty good.

Apple does not make the Hard Drive

I'm not saying I wouldn't be unhappy if the HD failed in a 4 month old laptop. We had a HD fail in a less than 1 month old eMac. They replaced the eMac with a new one because they lost the power button when replacing the HD. It was a heck of a lot more trouble to cart in an eMac than a MacBook Pro, but they fixed it and it is still working, but has been retired, because we bought a Mac mini to replace it.

You can get a bad HD every now and again. Apple doesn't make their own HDs, so it really isn't their fault, unless the update really did fry your drive or it was improperly installed or something. If you would like to post some real info about the update frying your drive, I might be a bit more sympathetic. If Apple makes good on a repair/replacement, I can't see how you have a lot to complain about. If they don't, then rant away.

I don't like the way the Apple stores have changed as Apple has become more mainstream, but I would still not want a Windows machine. Apple may still charge more than some other companies, but I think the quality and service is still better than most.
