iCloud is free... for now.
I will give anyone $500 if they sign to pay for my iCloud account for the next 20 years.

In reality I'd be happier if the software was available for making my own cloud inside my own house rather than in Apple's house.
Not sure it will do everything that iCloud promises but you can take a look at Rumpus:

I have ripped 500 to 600 CDs to an external HD in lossless, meaning none of them were purchased on iTunes. I have no interest in playing mp3's on my home stereo system. What else will the Cloud do?

Utilizing the cloud is useful. For people that desire universal access to their files, music etc., it's nice. Apple's version however, appears to be mostly limited to just their devices which is unfortunate because their implementation looks great. Google's offerings are more broadly accessible (including iPhone/Touch) I did get the invite for Google Music Beta and it works fine. It took about a week (off and on) to upload 5500 songs. I love it.
The biggest issue in my opinion regarding the digitization of music, books, files etc., is how all of it can be affected based on how the political winds blow. If at some point we elect a broadly critical government that decides to be the arbiter of taste, morality etc., and they actually amass the power to control the content of our lives then it would not be all that difficult for them to legislate electronic book burnings, and virtual music steam rollers simply by addling our devices or the streams that carry that information.
Physical books, movies, music, textbooks, newspapers etc., in my opinion are still something valuable. We have people here that concern themselves with the privacy policies of some specific corporation. But a President fill in the blank and a compliant congress with a helpful SCOTUS can simply flip a switch to empty our lives of our literary, sonic and aural lives sooner than we think.

I have the 64Gb iPad and 32 Gb
iPhone and I don't really see the need to store stuff on servers that might get hacked. I'm only using a bit
over half the storage on both devices and I have a lot stuff on there.
That's you.
I bet there are a *lot* more people out there that will use iCloud than not. I've got only 6G left on my 80G iPod, 2G left on my 64G iPads, and 1G left on my 32G iPhone. You don't have a lot of stuff on there.
I can't have all my stuff on all my devices, and I have to set up each up differently. And it's a little tedious if I want the same things on all of them.
Cloud storage is becoming more and more important to a lot of people who don't want to be tied to one place, one computer, or several computers.
The cool thing is we Rebels, Pirates, and Crazy Ones don't have to move forward. We don't have to go the Cloud, we can just stay status quo, and let Stevie do what he's always wanted to do- make computing something for the masses, not just for the geeks.
But those unwashed masses will never be as cool as us.

Just another way to make money.
Yeah, It's awful how they keep slamming us with these free services so's they can pad their bottom line.
55,000,000 Million Users X $30 =$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ .....no runs no drips no errors.......
or something like $1,650,000,000 thats just initial revenue for the purchase of Lion.
You can double that down the road after the first year of the free cloud expires.
It all seems a little cloudy to me so to speak... *(:>*

10.4 is still the best OS. I'm sorry, but it's true.
I was quite partial to 10.3. 10.4 started the feature bloat.
no, no, no. 10.2.8 - now that was when it all came together.

it really is about changing needs and those who need the change. when the iPod first arrived and people boasted about being able to carry their entire music collection around i thought 'who the hell really needs to do that?' then one day i was awaiting a flight at an airport gate and watched a dude with a walkman and headphones leafing through three 3" binders worth of CDs switching the discs he wanting to listen to about every 5 minutes. at that moment i realized 'OK, THAT guy needs an iPod!"
i can't imagine loading all my music onto my iPhone and i have far less than what people post owning here. i don't need it all the time. however, there have been times when i wanted to play one song for myself or someone else and i couldn't because it only resides on my iMac. it would be kind of cool to access it from the iCloud anywhere, anytime. now the only thing stopping me would be my $15 200MB data plan...

It doesn't sound like 5Gb's will save you, it might help though ;-)
"Users also can perform data backups through iCloud. Apple provides up to 5GB of storage capacity
free of charge to users iCloud. This capacity is much greater than other cloud-based storage which
usually provides a capacity of 2GB."
