If I ever had to own a car again I'd love to find one of these in pristine condition:

Ah, the venerable Honda Civic, now bloated and supersized to the point that the current model is still saddled with a 4 cylinder even though it is longer and heavier than the 1995 Accord, which Honda took pity on it and gave it a V6. A V6 Civic SI wagon might be close to a worthy competitor, though I would likely prefer a Fit Si AWD.
It's a more powerful 4 banger than the Accord's 1995 V6, so I don't see that as a problem. As for bloated and supersized, yes, it is much larger, as are most cars these days. It's hard to fight physics when it comes to adding safety features.

A lot has changed in 20 years.

Yes, a lot has changed, like the base V6 Accord is a half second faster 0-60 than Honda's "premiere performance coupe", the Civic Si. The Civic Si is 'one fast pig' that has gotten too fat. Honda started dominating the hot hatch market with the 86 Si, and the 89 Si locked it up for three years. Then they started getting bigger, bigger, and bigger, and then they added even more airbags, and because it gained so much weight, they had to reinforce it more to pass the new standards, so it gained more weight. It is almost two full sizes larger and 1000 lbs more than it used to be. Honda did give it enough power that it is a little faster than the 89 Si, but several other manufacturers have passed it up.

It would be nice to have a selection of wagons here in the U.S. instead of being fored to choose between the larger, less fuel-efficient minivans and SUVs.

Not to mention the current Civic gets better gas mileage than the Fit.

Yeah, what is up with that? It has been annoying me for a few years.

Remember, I said I wanted something small. All Mazda has to do is make a modern version of this.
